Above is a view of the Clark’s Fork of the Columbia near Frenchtown, Montana, where Eduarde Fournier was born and raised and where his second wife, Lelia has come to live. When she was a young girl, Lelia’s older sister was drowned in this same river. How could one drown in the placid stretch seen here? Ah, you haven’t seen this same, onrushing river near Alberton have you? With its huge boulders, its deep holes, and its swift current and year by year changes, the sometimes meandering and shallow Clark’s Fork becomes tyrannical.
